Potatoes, kale, goat cheese and sauteed walnuts
Take about five or six boiling potatoes--three if they are as big as your fist. Chop into bite size squares. Boil 15 minutes. Save water for kale. Take ten medium size deveined kale leaves and cook them in the potato water. Drain. Sautee three garlic cloves in olive oil in skillet and two shallots, add cooked potatoes. Add 1 cup chopped walnuts, sautee til toasted. Throw in cooked kale and then add about 4 oz herbed goat cheese. Serve with hearty bread and green salad. Mmmm. (serves two) We did this with our neighbor. She wasn't sure what to cook for dinner--neither were we. That is the result. Mmm that was delicious. Salt and pepper to taste. We make a lot of dishes using the process: "Hey what do you have?" "I got this here thingy" "...and you?" "I got this thingy..." "What if we..." "That sounds great." And it usually is.... |

Mixed Blessings-Mariachi bands & patriotism in San Francisco
1. Barack Obama -- yay! 2. San Franciscans, in general, do not tend toward patriotism. 3. We have roving mariachi bands in the Mission. Tuesday evening was wonderful. There were people dancing in the streets here. 19th Street completely blocked by people dancing, singing songs with Obama's name in it. A member of a Mariachi Band, playing a tuba jumped on top of a car and starting playing the Star Spangled banner. And the people in the streets, the San Franciscans spontaneously burst into song: the Star Spangled Banner. (Please see note #2 for SF denizens general reaction to patriotism) A street full of San Franciscans burst into a multi-cultural display of patriotism... Then we woke up to find we had a case of collective numbness and shock. We didn't know whether to be happy or sad, so we were confused. We were so sure it would fail. So, Prop 8 boo. There were lots of reasons for Prop 8 passing. There was polling place deception in California. (People left yes-prop 8 materials in polling places, and mis (dis?)information about the wording--and how to actually vote!) The prop was oddly written, and some people did not understand it. The yes-prop 8 commercials were outright lies. (and quite frankly misinformation) I contacted two radio stations in protest to the airing of the commercials. And the Mormon church with some messed up values, would like to control marriage. Scary at best. Sigh. We have come a long way, but we have got a ways to go. Current Music: Star Spangled Banner |

I have been trying to go to bed early. As you see this has not happened. I tried for earlier...and got caught someplace else--so much for a quiet evening at home. I have had a lot of insomnia lately for no discernible reasons. It could be whatever it is in the new bed that makes my eyes puffy when I wake up in the morning...sand in my eyes again and again...could be my partner snores...could be the idiots outside my apartment driving speakers around that vibrate everything in sight...could be the homeless guy banging on trash cans or the beeping of the damn garbage trucks...or the very loud Bauer commuter bus--which also rattles my windows. I am going to have a hot bath and pray that one night this week that I can (at a decent hour) actually get into bed and fall asleep and __stay__ asleep until 7am...I wnat a universal remote for people's car horns and their car stereos... |

Need something to do in San Francisco?
sf.funcheap.com has amusing options. "Dorkbot" and "instructables" are good for the geek crowd--and the laughing squid list usually has a good deal of something interesting toooo --not usually anything mainstream. If you tuned in looking for mainstream, you might have gotten the wrong channel. |

Unitarian Universalist Shooting -two dead
Sorry about the dreadful news update. The BBC story said the guy claims to have been picking on liberals. They also mentioned in the BBC feed The Tennessee Valley UU Church was also the shooter's ex-wife's church...not all news reports mention that potential issue. The world is sometimes deeply disturbing... Current Mood: PensiveCurrent Music: none |

Zoe's announcement
"Your skin looks so much better now than when you arrived. I think you are allergic to San Francisco, " says Zoe. There is little more endearing in the world than a nine year old who latches her arms and legs around you in a farewell hug and states, "I don't want you to go back to California." "I'll come back soon, Zoe. I promise." |

If I were the empress of education!!
I have for quite some time thought that all students should be able to do some solid concrete things, other than go to college...(especially since so many students do not make it through--and it isn't always necessary to create a thoughtful person capable of being a good member of society... A short review of something to consider: http://chronicle.com/free/v54/i34/34b01701.htmI do not feel that my BA education was spectacular--however, I did consider my Masters a worthwhile thing. But many people do not need a degree to do whatever they end up doing--and high school should not be geared primarily to prepping all high school students to go to college--since those students are in the minority anyway! It should get the academically oriented ones into college sooner, and get the others basic life skills..a welder makes about $100.00 per hour...electricians are also well paid... Farewell, my Suburu
An amusing and fast read....to which I respond with, I want chickens. Arizona sounds fun. The guns sound fun. The goats sound fun. The heat not so very much. Farewell, my subaru by Doug Fine...my next read I hope is the following: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Kingsolver. and perhaps the new, incredibly expanded McGee's "on food and Cooking" |
